虽然自１９６０年埃塞俄比亚选手阿贝贝·比基拉勇夺马拉松冠军开始，非洲和南美洲的运动员已经屡登奥运奖台，但是奥运的火炬从未来到过这两个大陆。这次火炬接力将非洲和南美洲包括在内，是对它们为奥林匹克运动发展所作贡献的认可，同时也是对奥林匹克价值观的认可。这种价值观，主张和平竞争，追求卓越超群，强调人类共性。它存在于每个民族，同时又把所有民族团结在一起。 对世界而言，每一届奥运会都是一次重温奥林匹克运动赖以发展的价值观的机会。北京的奥运火炬传递，体现着东西方传统的融合。它向全世界发出一个强有力的信息：尽管我们的文化存在种种差异，但是使我们团结的因素要远远超过那些使我们隔阂的因素；我们能够和平而建设性地共处，我们能够共同参与奥运对人类文明美好的追求。 奥运火炬抵达北京，象征着把希腊和西方的奥运传统与中国的奥运传统融为一体。它将成为北京悠久灿烂历史的新篇章。我希望中国人民能将这次火炬传递看成是一次学习奥运历史和宗旨的机会，看成是一个为奥运传统的延续和发展作出中国独特贡献的机会。 我相信，北京将为奥林匹克运动作出巨大贡献，使奥运会在深度和创意方面更上一层楼。中国人民正渴望以其独特的方式，向世界展示他们对奥运价值观与奥运传统的欢迎。 希腊人民和中国人民一样，在建设现代化国家的同时保留了与众不同的具有凝聚力量的文化。虽然希腊和中国的历史、传统有所不同，但对过去文化的尊敬使两国能够吸收借鉴却不失本色。我希望许多中国人能有机会在今年夏天亲眼目睹奥运传统的展示。希腊人民将尽一切可能，以他们闻名于世的好客传统欢迎你们。同样，我本人也热切期望能亲眼目睹首次在中国北京举行的奥运会，并与雅典奥组委全体成员一起尽力帮助这届奥运会举办成功。 |
The 2004 Athens Torch Relay will be the first truly global torch relay, beginning and ending in Greece, uniting all five continents represented by the Olympic rings and touching Africa and South America for the first time ever. At this time of conflict and heightened sensitivities, the passage of the torch will give millions of people a moment and an opportunity to ponder the possibility of a better world and share the Olympic ideal of hope. Although African and South American athletes have graced the medal stands since Ethiopian marathoner Abebe Bikila’s legendary 1960 race, the Torch has never visited these continents. Including these regions in our torch relay is a recognition of their importance to the Olympic Movement. And it is a recognition that the Olympic values that unite us all -- peaceful competition, the pursuit of excellence, and our common humanity - are found in every nation. Every Olympic Games is a chance for the world to re-embrace the values that support the Olympic movement. The combination of Eastern and Western traditions illuminated by the torch’s Beijing arrival will send a strong message around the world: despite the many differences between our cultures, there is still far more that unites us than divides us; we can live together peacefully and productively and we can all participate in the Olympic search for the best in humanity. The arrival of the torch in Beijing will be another chapter in Beijing’s long and important history, celebrating the joining of the Greek and Western Olympic tradition with those of China. I hope that the people of China will see it as an opportunity to learn something of the history and the philosophy behind the Olympic Games, and that they will find it an opportunity to make a uniquely Chinese contribution to an Olympic tradition that continues to grow and evolve. I am sure that Beijing will make a tremendous contribution to the Olympic Movement, adding another layer of depth and creativity to the Olympic Games; and the people of China will be eager to welcome the world to a distinctly Chinese celebration of the values and traditions that bring us together. The people of Greece, like the people of China, have been building a modern nation, without losing the culture that makes us distinct and brings our people together. Even though our history and traditions are very different from yours, Greeks and Chinese share a respect for the past that allows us to assimilate change without losing our identity. I hope that many Chinese will have the opportunity to witness our celebration of the Olympic tradition firsthand this summer; the people of Greece will do everything they can to welcome you, our traditional hospitality, or philoxenia, is famous around the world. In return, I am looking forward to witnessing the first Chinese Olympic Games and, with all of ATHOC, eager to do everything we can to help make them a success. |
